It is possible for the setting to take on the role of a character, although it's not pretty general. The general way of setting can take a role by acting backgrounds or conflicts. According to the story, In Trouble, if there was a blizzard or a avalanche, then it might be rational for the setting to be a character; because the nature might conceive thinking to affect the narrator by accidents. Furthermore, the setting characters may have internal conflicts. The events that would happen totally different in the story if the setting was a character; since the story would include the feeling and thinking of setting character and its viewpoints. There are some facts happened in our lives, such as people who trapped in World Trade Center during 911, though they were terrified and fearful, they still have to face the truth-- the airplane was impacted to the building. The setting is sort of acting as a character. On the other hand, people who isolated on an island might feel lonely and solitarily, since they would like to go back to civilization; they cannot help but stay.The setting also affected the characters by taking a role of a character.
